The Slot – Origins and Use of the Word

Slot

A slot is a grammatical term that includes data paths and operation issue machinery. In the VLIW world, this means “opening” or “slotted”. It is also a common name for a job position at a newspaper or gazette. The term “slot” is also used to describe an authorization from the air-traffic authority or an airport. This article explores the origins and use of the word slot.

The slot is a specialized area on the ice between the face-off circles in the offensive zone. In hockey, it represents the area where a player has the best chance of scoring without a deflection. A player can score with pinpoint accuracy from a low slot by taking wrist shots, while a high slot allows him to shoot from the left with a clear view of the net. If the slot is high, a goaltender needs to react lightning fast to protect his net from any incoming puck.

While the return to player (RTP) is the most important statistic, many other statistics are equally important. For example, if a slot machine has twelve different pay tables, the probability of all of those symbols landing on a pay table is zero. The largest payout happens on average 4,000 times, and the probability of hitting it is 0.4 percent. With such a low RTP, this would result in a very boring game for the players. In addition, the payout odds would be disproportionate to the frequency of symbols on a single physical reel.
