The Basics of Poker

One of the most classic card games is Poker. While no one can pinpoint exactly when and where the game was first played, most people believe that it is based on earlier versions. Jonathan H. Green, a professor from the University of California, San Diego, first attached the word “Poker” to the game after observing it being played on a Mississippi riverboat. He described it as a two-to-four-person game with 20 cards.

It is not surprising that the game has seedy roots. The word “poke” was a term for card hustlers, who often cheated unsuspecting opponents. The “r” may have been added to confuse players who already knew the slang. Whatever the origins, poker has become a very popular game of chance and strategy. The most important question to ask yourself before jumping in is, are these terms correct?

Regardless of the version you are playing, it is important to remember that poker is played with chips. The first known form was played with only twenty cards, though many countries now play with fewer or even no cards. The number of chips used in a game depends on the size of the deck. For instance, the white chip is worth five cents. The blue chip, meanwhile, is worth ten cents. Each player in a poker game purchases poker chips. Each player in the game buys in at a fixed amount of chips.

In the beginning of the hand, most poker games require each player to place a compulsory bet, called the ante or blind. This bet will be doubled when the dealer makes the first bet. In many variants, players will also make one more contribution to the pot before the next round of betting. The next time a player decides to bet, he or she is said to bet. After all, the betting interval will end when all players have bet.
