Charles Fey invented the first commercially viable slot machine in 1887. His machine was similar to the Sittman and Pitt invention, but allowed automatic payouts and had three spinning reels. His machine also replaced poker symbols with diamonds, spades, horseshoes, hearts, and liberty bells, and the combination of three aligned liberty bells was the highest payout. The slot machine became a hugely popular attraction in casinos, and its popularity continued as microprocessors were introduced to automate the machines’ internal mechanisms and increase their speed and reliability. But even as the number of slot machines exploded, casinos were hesitant to increase their house advantages too much for fear of killing the golden goose by driving away customers. Nevertheless, casino managers are now more likely to use data to create “sticky” slots that can generate revenue even as they increase the cost of play. As a result, the number of people who play slots regularly has increased significantly.
