Poker is a game of chance played with a pack of 52 cards. Each player’s hand is made up of five cards, which are ranked according to their Aces. The highest-ranking hand wins the pot.
Players must bet or raise before the deal begins. Cards are dealt face up.
Each player is required to put in a certain number of chips. Typically, a chip is worth between 10 and 25 whites. Dark-colored chips are typically worth two, four, or five reds. A blue chip is typically the lowest valued chip.
During the first betting round, the player to the left of the big blind (the player who will be the first to act after the big blind) is the first to raise. If that player raises, the remaining players have to match the bet.
Once all players have checked their hands, the second round of betting takes place. Each player is allowed to discard three of their cards.
The dealer then deals the next two community cards. He then “burns” one card from the top of the deck. This card is used to break ties.
The cards are now face up and the player on the left of the big blind is the first to act. In subsequent rounds, the small blind acts first.
Unless otherwise specified by the rules, the first player to make a bet is the one with the right to do so. For the draw games, a player must also ante, or pay, a certain amount to the pot.
